Synthtopia rocks! I also track http://www.createdigitalmusic.com and http://www.analogindustries.com. Each of these participate in a chunk of the music tech community-- the comments are very IxDA like. Analog Industries is the blog for Audio Damage, a two-person outfit that makes plugins; they have interesting conversations about interaction design of their products. Create Digital Music is fairly synth-heavy and has lots of great thoughts on how a new piece of gear can fit into a process and be used as a true instrument.
When I say "authentic instrument" I mean something that is designed to express its own sound vs. imitate another. Even though an Akai Sampler can be used to imitate another sound, it has parameters designed to shape the sound into completely different textures. I do agree that mixing tracks live requires a skill that doesn't come from straighforward playlisting, but that distinction has existed decades before digital came along-- there were your DJs who would mix tracks on two turntables, and there were your party DJs who would use the turntables to play one track after another-- similar techniques exist for live mixing, and some (Richie Hawtin, for example) have used the digital mixing platform to mix FOUR tracks together at a time. Granted, a lot of these guys are using physical vinyl as interfaces to interact with the digital tracks on screen. What an exciting time to be alive! :-) This thread has gone so far away from the original call about synthesizer interactions. But this is too much fun ... any other music tech geeks out there? We should have our own breakout session at Interaction '09. Anyone up for a live set at one of the receptions?? Each of us could bring our favorite piece of musc gear that fits in our carryons and doesn't raise eyebrows at the airport ... - N On Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 8:44 PM, Angel Marquez <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>wrote: > > http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2008/11/25/control-ableton-live-with-your-iphone-3/ > ________________________________________________________________ Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)!
