Clearly, there are great opportunities for organizations such as IxDA and IAI and ASIS&T to collaborate, and we should encourage cross-training and cross-pollination. These sorts of conversations (though wearying for some of us) are an important part of that process (so thanks Richard and Dave and Peter and others for forcing us to engage).
However, I also believe it's equally important for these two communities to continue to grow and evolve independently. It's been wonderful to see the IxDA community flourish in recent years, and the discussions and events and books that have been nurtured within and inspired by this community are immensely valuable. I'm reading Designing Web Interfaces (http://designingwebinterfaces.com/) by Bill Scott and Theresa Neil right now. It's fantastic! On the IA side, the pace has slowed these past few years, but I see the sparks of new growth in some of the conversations catalyzed by Jesse's plenary, and even more recently in a talk given yesterday by Dan Klyn called Now That I See It, which I've written about briefly here: http://www.findability.org/archives/000233.php In short, I believe we can do great things together AND apart, so I look forward to seeing y'all next year in Savannah and Phoenix and maybe even Svalbard :-) Peter Morville President, Semantic Studios http://semanticstudios.com/ http://findability.org/ -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Richard Dalton Sent: Friday, April 03, 2009 7:45 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [IxDA Discuss] JJG's IA Summit 2009 Keynote Thanks Dave, in fact I *am* doing a few things. My goal here, however, was actually to turn that question around and encourage the board members who serve the members of these organizations to do everything they can to work together even more. I also wanted to encourage discussion from the "thought leaders" and ask them what they're doing about broader thinking and collaboration - I think we've actually seen quite a lot of good back and forth (and of course the usual amount of sniping and character assassination ;-) So now perhaps we could turn the discussion to ideas for practical collaboration opportunities? I'll throw some of these ideas out: - A joint "UX Job site / board / whatever" - Someone had the idea of using JJGs "planes" to deconstruct products and analyze how IA and IxD work together. - Leveraging this excellent message board software for IAI I'll post more as I think of them, anyone else? - Richard . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
