I believe that "Dirt under the fingernails" is a selling point, tho many clients have some difficulty reconciling that you might have both technical expertise AND strategic or "big picture" skills.

Still, the newly-lean economy may be more receptive to a UxP designer with tractionable tech skills...

I try to make the "efficiency" and "good process" arguments for it.
