I'm just a "business guy" lurking on this thread, but... Come on! It's not what you know - it's what you do. Neither depth nor breadth of knowledge is a guarantee of success - or even of baseline competence. This is *especially* true in interaction design because it is fundamentally about understanding human behavior and experience. So why couldn't a designer with only limited exposure to the Canon come along and rock all our worlds simply by virtue of her sensitivity or empathy?
There may very well be a "problem" with the interaction design community - but I suspect the problem is not that its members don't read enough. It might be that they talk too much... (Kidding!
