I'm grappling with this issue as well.

Personally speaking, I am looking at backup to disk. I would either add a
set of external SATA drives to the NAS, or have another NAS box backing up
the primary NAS box.

I don't want to have to worry about swapping tapes, bad tapes, lost tapes,
etc.

On the other hand, you'd be surprised, many of the "cloud-based" backup
services are very efficient and operate at the block level.  I don't know
what speed you have, but those may not be such a bad idea.

(I have the speed, but I don't fully trust "the cloud" with my data...
yet...)
