LTO-5 tape technology of today delivers about 3 TB at up to 140 MB/sec. Successive LTO generations are expected to be able to deliver up to about 500 MB/sec. This ain't yer grandpa's 9-track reel tape. ;-) Most folks doesn't typically get that much bandwidth from their personal HDs unless they're streaming from a RAID array at home coupled with impressive HBAs. ;-) (With first gen LTO, I got 22.5 MB/sec write sustained very reliably.) Keep in mind, that's for sequential performance. HDs are much better for random performance. With that said, I would recommend a small RAID enclosure attached via eSATA or some other high performance mechanism (there are even ExpressCard/34 cards for this!) plus a bunch of hard drives. That tend to be the lower overall cost in a home context. -Dan _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list [email protected] https://lists.lopsa.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/discuss This list provided by the League of Professional System Administrators http://lopsa.org/
