Why not use external drive(s)? This is the solution I'm currently looking at for my home fileserver. If your backup mechanism uses compression, a 1 or 2 TB drive in an external enclosure and then connected to the system via eSATA may be sufficient. This may also provide faster transfer rates than tape.
