How do you know?  Seems like that statement should be revised with a phrase
like "might have been"

We don't know for a fact whether or not they gave my email to any such
company, but if they did, why did they do it?

Sure it is.  Just like...  I would blame the bank, if they invested my money
through some guy who blew it all in Vegas.  Even though I only directly gave
my money to the bank, it's still their fault for disseminating it to
somebody who wasn't responsible with it.
