This is key.   Many Engineers have a very legalistic definition of spam,
having to do with who signed up;  and yeah, those definitions are good- 
certainly, if it's not double opt-in, it's almost certainly spam.   But
even if it is double opt in, sending people messages that are not 
properly targeted is just rude;  if people agree to receive messages
from you and then they get stuff that doesn't look like what they 
agreed to?  they aren't going to spend the time figuring out if
they really agreed to it or not; they are going to toss it with the 
spam, and to expect them to do otherwise is irrational.   

Granted; this has a lot more to do with the content of the message
than where it's sent from, but especially things like funny reply-to 
addresses can make a big difference.
