Expanding on some of the threads below...

This might make an interesting news segment..

hackerspace uses readily available technologies to nap perps...

might get some tv time out of it, and they may even broadcast the stills of them looking at the camera.

Some of the AssentWorks folks weigh in on posting the urination

in this matter and not treat it as low-brow humour as mentioned below

Sorry Justin, I meant to forward these messages to you, too.

I think that Tom is right, much of the public's perception of us will
be determined by how we handle this offence. Whether we are seen as IT
savvy, responsible citizens, who are using technology to help the
police identify the offenders and thereby discouraging such public
mischief or we are seen merely as irresponsible voyeurs, who are using
this video to seek attention and satisfy our own puerile pleasure,
will be based largely on our behaviour. The question that many people
will be asking is: What did they (Skullspace/AssentWorks members) do
with the video, offer it to the police as evidence or just exploit it
as a source of low-brow entertainment? Has anyone contacted the police
yet?

Based on their actions in the video finding the cams and then leaving, I
suspect they not be back. However, if we printed their pics and posted them on
the wall in the lobby, they will be the message.

Here's a suggestion for this to be positive.

If it's the police releasing the video looking for "suspects", it's them
releasing it, not us. It would be Skullspace's diligent, leading-edge, awesome
networking technology and the smart people that implemented it that actually
caught someone on tape. And then, as conscientious IT professionals, passed it
to the police for them to do as they deem fit. Like the case in Toronto, where
the police there are looking for the person who did....something similar but
on a homeless person.

Frankly, this bugger shouldn't just get away with it. More to the point, it
might be a way for him to get that psychological help he so desperately needs.

I hear what you say on the association of our groups; but remember, the
government funding agencies and our sponsors do associate us.

I don't believe many people outside our members associate sksp and
AW; even a number of members have never been on the opposite side. This
video has been only put up under the sksp label.

P.S. - Midnight update - The video now has 17,000 hits, with over 2/3 in
the
last 4 hours. This thing is going viral. At least for Winnipeg.

Sure, it's awesome to set up a new camera and catch someone red-handed (or
whatever!), but seriously, we have to put forth a positive public image.
This
is especially true now, since we're expected to receive significant public
funding. OK, it's under Skullspace, but we're team-mates, and we will both
benefit from Assentworks funding. I don't want to sound paranoid, but
interest
in this video is taking off. Dried pee on our landing isn't what we want
people to think of when they hear Skullspace or Assentworks.....!

Hi Robert,

I looked at the video of that smooth-operating lady's man and his lusty
female
sidekick....unbelievable. But shows that security cameras work.

If it was under Assentworks, I would not want it put up for the
public to see, as it is pretty bad and can't show us as being the
classy bunch we are. But even though it's with Scullspace, once
everyone gets their laughs, shouldn't this be taken down? I doubt
visitors will appreciate visiting us with dried urine down the
steps. We may be a "low overhead" place but not "raunchy". My two bits.

Of course, if it does go viral, it can be an opportunity to get
attention.
But
it can be the wrong kind if mismanaged.

What do you think? This will definitely come up in tomorrow's meeting!
