We tend to use the term "hackathon" very loosely. To me, they are a chance to work on stuff with (or just around) a bunch of other people that may be interested or even helpful. They are also a good opportunity to have talks and let non-members see what sort of things happen in the space. There have been a couple times where a CTF has landed on a hackathon weekend and that has helped fill up the space, but most are not as focused as that.
