That's a pretty good question.

Before we had a space of our own we used to use the Hackathons as
opportunities to get together and work on or discuss common interests and
projects.  Some people broke out into small groups to work on projects,
other played StarCraft, and we had talks going on.  The talks really helped
bring in new people and build a sense of community.  We also had bake sales
for fund raisers.

Personally I really like that format and it was great to see people doing
talks at this hackathon.
