I've got several pairs of self powered speakers that auto detect and
turn on and off in response to a signal. I use a set of "AR Powered
Partners" in my library with a Squeezebox for exactly this reason, they
are on top of bookcases way out of reach. The PP are old, I got them
at least 14 years ago, you probably can find them on ebay. They are
very nice sounding, heavy, each is a triangle about cut from a 10x10
square about four inches thick.

I've got some Mackie 824 studio monitors that are also very nice and
auto detect. But they are $1000, which may be out of your budget target
