That's very helpful, thanks.  It lead be (indirectly) to the
Advent AV570 (which you can find at J&R on Amazon), which
has good reviews and also features auto-on.  There's some
evidence that these speakers are in some way related to the
old Audio Research line, but it's a little hard to follow.

Just a little!  Even the Advents (at $240 US) are a little
more than I had in mind, but I'd rather pay more up front
and have them switch themselves off when not in use than
gradually bleed electricity over many years :).
