I think it's easier than you think: as soon as you play a song, you create a playlist. When you open the web interface, you'll see the current playlist on the right. Once you've got a selection of songs you'd like to save, you can do this from the web interface or using the SavePlaylist.pm plugin. You'll find it in the the "Browse playlist" menu.
