There have been instances of the IR LED solder leads breaking.  Easily
fixed if you can get it open and have entry-level soldering skills.

Otherwise - are you sure it's the remote and not an unresponsive
Squeezebox caused by network or server issues?  Is there another remote
you can try - JVC DVD or a universal programmed for JVC DVD, for
example?
