Hi, Hope my experiences help.

I did the same thing with an old all in one router/modem/wifi box as I
wanted it to stream over a distance of 2 feet to my SB3 (I know I could
use a CAT5 cable!!).

What I found was the most important thing to do is stop the router that
you intend to use as an AP from DHCP - let the router modem do that.

Then I found that on some router/modem/wifi boxes you can disable the
parts you do not need. But this does not matter as you can delete out
all of the internet connection settings and as the router will not be
physically connected it will not matter.

I found that you will need to plug the router in to a laptop and
manually configure the access list and WPA (i.e. put the SqueezeBox MAC
address in and the WPA Key) via the web control page. Then connect it
back on to the network. I found that you will now not be able to access
the web control pages on the router until you disconnct from the network
and in to a stand alone computer.

In my set up my AP is physically connected via a CAT5 cable to the
router/modem that is connected to the internet (the box that does the
DHCP)
