Some security s/w still interfere with network streams even when
disabled - I find definitive test is when the security s/w is
uninstalled.

There are few possible sources of the problem such as DNS, HTTP for ASX
or buffering the audio.  A reasonable test to see what is happening
during connection is to use mplayer from a command lineas follows.

mplayer -v -playlist http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r4.asx

It should give a log of what is happening as attached and may indicate
which phase is causing the problem.
