Clive - well sure one can force SBS to use SOX with any options you
like (via custom-convert.conf) - I do this to force everything to 24/96
for example. You could force a 2:1 compression in there...

In practice though, RG in smartgain mode does achieve a general
levelling of track-to-track volume - without compressing the hell out of
the music. It really is turning the volume up/down once per track (well,
mostly down!) rather than squashing the dynamics with compression or
limiting.

Perhaps I'm missing the point?
