Glad to hear that things may be sounding better. As was mentioned, it is far too easy to pick the wrong option with MP3Gain, so if that is indeed the root cause of your problem it's completely understandable.
What would be slick is if someone adapted Robin Bowes' apply_replaygain.pl script to deal with MP3 (at present it only does FLAC). It's a Perl script, so it's completely cross-platform.
