There has been a fair amount of discussion of MP3Gain in this thread, including warnings about its ability to actually modify the audio rather than just write Replaygain tags. I think some clarification is in order:
1. When MP3Gain amends the audio itself, it does NOT actually change the audio data. Every frame in an MP3 file includes a header that tells the playback device what volume to play it at. It is this header that MP3Gain amends. 2. The advantage of doing it this way is that the volume leveling works on ALL playback devices - not just those that support Replaygain. 3. A disadvantage is that there is no way to prevent the updated volume being applied. 4. Another disadvantage is that you can only set track gain or album gain this way. 5. By default, when MP3Gain updates the frame headers, it also adds a tag to the file as a whole that will allow it to back-out the frame header changes. 6. Note that if you use MP3Gain to modify the frame headers, it can only do so in steps of 1.5dB. So you won't get *perfect* volume leveling this way, but it'll be much better than nothing. -- cliveb Transporter -> ATC SCM100A ------------------------------------------------------------------------ cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=72031 _______________________________________________ discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
