The Brightness button is used for firmware updates on the SB2/SB3/Classic. If you don't manage to repair your SB3/Classic remote, then you should set the SB to update firmware automatically. You can do this (after you get a functioning remote) by holding down the left arrow key for ~5 seconds until you get into the basic player firmware menu. Somewhere in the setup options is an option for automatically updating the firmware.
