1. HOW DO YOU FIND MUSIC IN YOUR OWN LIBRARY ? Usually My Music > Albums (which are sorted by Artist / Year / Albums, so it's a lot like browsing by artist), and sometimes My Music > New Music. - most of the time I use the SBC, but sometimes also web ui and player menus (be it Boom's front panel, Touch's touchscreen, or IR remote). - I don't use ratings, play counts, history at all, and don't really have any interest in doing so - I use MusicIP _a_lot_ - I do use album art when selecting, mostly because it's faster - Yes, often I search/browse by artist and want to find something related to that
2. HOW DO YOU USUALLY FIND NEW MUSIC YOU LIKE TO GET BUT CURRENTLY DON'T HAVE IN YOUR LIBRARY ? - friends, music press, Internet radio, Pandora, Napster, Last.fm - Artist stations, similar artists, etc. - I use Napster and Amazon web sites. I also often read up on artists at allmusic.com - I use both SBs and computer to search for music. - When possible I "preview" music on Napster, on my main systems, for days or weeks before purchasing. In this case "preview" means playing the whole album, not only clips. I buy the CD when it's something I think I'll want to keep, at true CD quality. 3. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE ABLE TO FIND MUSIC IN YOUR OWN LIBRARY IN THE FUTURE ? I don't use search much in my own library. It's only 6k tracks, and I know most of what I have. What I've forgotten I usually rediscover via MusicIP random playlists. What browsing functionality is missing today? A "similar artists" or "similar music" type function that pulls up a list of suitable albums and artists. Something like MusicIP that generates a browse list instead of a playlist. That would be great! 4. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO FIND NEW MUSIC YOU LIKE TO BUY/GET IN THE FUTURE ? Through SB, computer, reading reviews in newspapers and magazines, friends' recommendations. On SB, it would be great to have a similar artists type function that would work both within my library and outside my library. I think Pandora (seed it with something from your library), Napster automix, last.fm, and probably Rhapsody do this pretty well (though each slightly different), so for SBS it would require doing something better. 5. WHAT KIND OF TAGGING/MANAGEMENT DO YOU DO ON NEW MUSIC YOU ADD TO YOUR LIBRARY TO MAKE IT EASIER TO FIND STUFF LATER ON ? The tags I add are "handled" by standard SBS, but they aren't part of standard browsing. Such as COMPOSER, though I don't think I'd use that much. - I almost never use BMF, but folder structure is important to me for overall file management. - I don't use Custom Scan. I don't manually add ratings because they would change too much over time, it's too much work, and it's not very helpful to me at all. 6. DO YOU SYNCHRONIZE THE DATA IN SBS WITH SOME OTHER APPLICATION TO MAKE IT EASIER TO FIND INTERESTING MUSIC ? I don't use any play statistics. I do use MusicIP fingerprints extensively. -- aubuti Nothing high-end, but music anywhere I want it, and it's '100% wind powered' (http://www.cleancurrents.com/).
