quick answer for now. The TOUCH itself, would output audio (analog or digital, but in your case analog I think) via two regular RCA cables that would then connect to the audio in of your preamp/receiver. Think of the TOUCH as a CD player that you would hook to a stereo. But instead of a CD player it is a networked digital music player. The TOUCH then connects either via WIFI or ethernet to your local area network's router. Your computer with the music is also connected to this router. Your computer is running SqueezeboxServer (SbS). So you choose whatever music you want to play on SbS (artist, albums, random, playlists, etc.) and the sound comes out of the TOUCH and into your stereo. Plus you can also choose to play internet radio streams, pandora, etc. The sound of the touch is only limited by the sound of the stereo you are inputting the signal into (I mean for normal folks....without delving into all the audiophile stuff people argue over, like $5,000 patch cables, $30,000 CD players, etc.). You can control all this from SbS interface (on your computer), or from the TOUCH's screen, or from any computer connected to your LAN. You can also control with iPENG on an iphone or itouch. And there are apps for other smart phones. I'm at my weekend place at the moment, listening to music via a TOUCH going into a pair of audioengine A5 selfpowered speakers and it sounds fantastic. Not to confuse things, but the touch can also act as the SbS itself. That is, you plug a USB drive with your music into the Touch and then tell the Touch to use the internal SbS (called tinySbS). I started two years ago with a Boom for a bedside internet radio. I now have a TRANSPORTER feeding my main listening stereo, a TOUCH feeding the system with my TV/media setup, a bedside boom, players in bathroom & kitchen, along with a Boom and Touch at the weekend cabin. And I can control ALL OF IT from iPENG (a $10 app) running on my iPhone. And I can play something different in every room or have them all perfectly synched. My friends think it is magic when we sit on the couch in the living room, and I change the music, change the volume, etc. (of course my friends and I are all from the (original) vinyl records generation). All the while, the small computer (dedicated to being my music server) with all my music is buried away in a back room cabinet with the router and cable modem. Out of site and out of hearing. That's the real value that many new folks miss: This technology keeps your music player AWAY from all the computer hardware dealing with the files, etc. (and sending them bitperfect to your player). The downside is that you do have to have a well functioning local network at home. My brother has a Touch and Boom and both are WIfi connected with no issues. Well, not so quick an answer I guess, but short answer: yes, the touch can produce excellent sound! Many folks think it is *almost* as good as the $2,000 SB Transporter. -- garym ------------------------------------------------------------------------ garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81377 _______________________________________________ discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
