I had some shortcuts on the first version (long tap on title gets you back to home menu), but most people found it unintuitive (if they found out at all). There is one diffent strategy as well: In screensafer mode a tap blends in all needed controls (on top or bottom). Another tap would make the controls invisible again. As one cannot use the tap anymore to get out of screensafer mode there would be a button too to leave the screen. This approach takes (some) more time to implement, as one has to do the UI and animations. But every user will find out how it goes without a manual. Maybe I do both (and gestures first, as its easier to implement). Your gestures wouldn't interfere with the 'one tap = show/hide controls' approach, which is quite good.
