Personally, I use MythTV, but it's quite a 'DIY' solution.

It's a centralised networked hub for recording TV. The equivalent of
SBS is the 'backend' which records TV, stores the listings and
recording information, does the heavy lifting of removing commercials
and much more. The equivalent of Squeezeboxes are 'frontends' which are
silent machines that plug into your TV.

I think there are other less DIY projects such as Windows Media Center.
