I use the Smartmix plugin to generate on the fly playlists pulled from my own collection and Spotify. That's pretty good for finding new stuff similar to your existing collection. I also exchange emails with a fried with whom I share Spotify playlists, and I occasionally look at what my Last.FM friends have been playing.
