I'm new to this "casting" stuff as of yesterday but I'm learning fast.
As I reported earlier, I have experimented running cast capable apps, Spotify and LocalCast, with good success. But then I noticed that my Android phone has an overall casting control. I turned it on and the cast icon appears in the notification area at the top of the screen. Figuring I had nothing to loose I fired up Squeeze Player and Orangesqueeze, selected my phone as the player, and sure enough my LMS library is available for casting and control. Just like a "real" Squeezebox. And the Triode Spotify app works too. It seems that the music is actually being cast from the Squeeze Player app on the phone and not from LMS running on my network. I close OrangeSqueeze and the music continues. I turn off Squeeze Player and the music stops. Turn it back on and it starts again. If I lose WiFi on the phone the music stops. So it's definitely being channeled through the phone. With the LocalCast app, once you start the stream from the phone you can shut down the app, leave WiFi coverage, or shut the phone off and the music keeps streaming from the network server. I have no idea how routing the data through the phone affects the bit rate delivered to the DAC . Those with knowledge of the inner workings of the Squeezebox system may be able to shed light on this. All I can say is that playing music this way, the sound quality of the digital-out of the Chromecast seems on par with the digital-out of the Touch. My phone is a Nexus 5 that just updated to Android 6. I installed the Google Cast app to set up the Chromecast and I suspect that is where the phone's seemingly innate casting ability came from. Not sure if all Androids have this capability. I still intend to experiment with squeeze2upnp to get the Chromecast to be even more like a "real" Squeezebox. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ markbrauer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63564 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104383 _______________________________________________ discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
