Yes, I'm suspecting sabotage against Realtek by MS for their big annual
update that they are releasing now, and which I installed two weeks ago.
This problem popped up after that, but I probably didn't reboot my
machine for a week after. It's just too odd that their "troubleshooting"
seems to nuke everything related to Realtek.  Something is fighting
that. It's probably something called Waves MaxxAudioPro that I'd never
noticed before, and that seems impossible to uninstall.  (I've
reinstalled Realtek 3x since Thursday night.)

I opened a case with MS about this.  We'll see...
