Maybe imaging isn't the best word here, but it would be playing the left channel out of the speaker on the right and vice versa. I confess that on much of my music I don't recall whether, for example, the lead guitarist is stage-left and the rhythm guitarist or keyboardist is stage-right. But on some of my best-loved recordings I do.
These get flipped if I swap the speakers, because when using the optical input the speaker with the amp will always play the left channel and the passive speaker will always play the right channel.
