BTW, this issue cannot be solved with your 'caution' advice. A preamp
doesn't help vs. just using an amp. The volume control is not effective
either. 

The only way it can be solved is to add a pro-audio signal limiter to
your audio output chain. This protects your speaker system (and amps)
with a slight degradation in sound quality.

Read up on the feature of DBX limiters and speaker control processors
called PeakStopPlus:

-"PeakStopPlus - allows you to set the maximum signal level you want to
pass through this channel. While it's virtually impossible to eliminate
distortion, the PeakStopPlus circuit does it gracefully and effectively
with minimal distortion."-

You can get one of these or something like it to understand what I am
talking about:

It sounds like a feature you should add to the SB. Maybe you can
