As Mark described I'm going to use the analogue inputs of the receiver rather than any of the digital inputs.
I had in fact overlooked that I can't use the sub input on the 5.1 analogue inputs. but as I was planning on one room doing mono anyway that doesn't really matter. On that note, what is a cheap solution to mix the left and right signal of a squeezebox into a mono signal? I had originally thought of wiring both outputs together but our electronics engineer at work questioned my sanity (you can't short outputs end of story).
