The gmail notifier uses both 80 and 443.   443 is used for the secure
portion (ie. username/password).  It does not speak the POP protocol,
so as you've discovered, you are not going to be able to get it to work
that way.  Port 995 is the SSL version of POP - the SSL conversation is
not one you can just use as you see fit.  There appropriate dialog must
occur between the SSL client and server.

Gmail requires SSL - plain and simple.
