I don't think Slimserver is bad, in fact I think it is quite amazing in what it does and the number of formats it supports.
The web interface performance seems to be the issue that people complain about. For example look at Mouse it is fast because it offloads the client functionallity but still uses all the excellent components of Slimserver. Therefore, can the web build process be improved? Can more be offloaded to the client browser?
