Thank you for the detailed theroy of a possible explaination above
furthering my general understandings.

Good questions:

My OS is M.S. XP , yes I do read of Vista quirks but that does not
apply here. 

I use M.S. XP WMP rip to lossless VBR in their preferances. No other
transcoding apps...

I will now run a hardware check on the disks to check there are no read
errors on any part of the disk.

Thank you for your time and suggestions.

P.S. I was just now running SB3 analog outs
eliminating the DAC from the equation (as suggested by the previous
poster), and experienced the "Screech" event...

I will proceed in tracking this down, pehaps it is a disk problem, I'll
work on that possibility.
