One purpose is to load firmware onto the controller. One of the good 
things of the Squeezebox stuff is that the SD people tend to build 
generic devices that end up donig more than they had ever imagined. The 
controller is basically a tiny Linux computer with Wifi. The SD card 
slot adds external storage to that. That greatly enhances the 
possibilities for people who like to tinker.

I like the duet because it show clearly that Logitech/SD keep their eyes 
on the 'network' as a whole and not just
a single device. I already have 4 SB3's so I won't be getting a duet 
myself, but I might buy another controller for the bedroom even though I 
dislike the price. Truth is that there's just not enough competition in 
this market.
