NAS Devices are good for storing data but most of them are way under powered for running thins like SS and SC. Just read through the threads here, many people say they are under powerded.
For actually less money than a decent NAS i have a mini iTX computer and a 500GB usb hard drive. The iTX is a 1Ghz processor with 1GB ram and runs WIndows XP. I have 3 SB3's connected to it all running different stream and no lag in the menu's on any of the SB3's. I think I could probably run at least 2 more SB3's off of this with out any problems. Now if I was to have it run a version of Linux it would probably be quicker. This creates a totally silent system that draws only 17 watts when fully running, and 9 watts in idle mode. I have never turned it off. BTW most NAS have fans of some sort that make noise. If I wanted to spend a little more money and add another 500GB USB drive (which I may have to do soon) I would still have only spent about 50% of what it costs for an Infrant NAS with 1TB of storage. There are other NAS out there that are cheaper but then you also have less ability to play with its operating system. I will admit it does draw a little more power but only about 25% more. But still only about 1/10 of what a regular computer would draw minimum. If you already have an NAS and it is not power full enough or you can't load SS or SC the a mini iTX is a good choice. Scahtzy Edit: BTW i can access the music or any other file on the USB drive connected to the Mini iTX Computer from any other computer on my network at any time I want. -- schatzy Kitchen - SB3 - Russound R235LS Amp - Russound SP-M8IM speakers in ceiling Main Stereo - SB3 - Nikko Beta 30 Preamp - Nikko Alpha 230 Amplifier - Genesis VI Speakers ------------------------------------------------------------------------ schatzy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11827 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42364 _______________________________________________ discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
