PC speakers have and are improving all the time. Driven not only by people ripping their music collections, or buying them on-line, but also by the demands of games for higher quality sounds.
Game immersion has a lot to do with sound from the bass rumble of a spaceship to the rapid response of a gunshot and the spacial positioning that needs a reasonably high quality speaker.
