For a dedicated server internal drives are preferred because they're
cheap, don't need any extra external power and are faster than external
drives.
People use NAS because they don't want to run a full fledged server to
share their files. A NAS is actually nothing more than an underpowered
server. NAS typically draw less power and are quieter in operation but
even a 5 year old PC used as a server outperforms any consumer NAS.
If you decide to run a server then there's no need for a NAS unless you
want to use it to backup your server.
