There is a IR sender built into the controller.
Today it can be used to control a Squeezebox Classic or any of its
predecessors.
Have a look in Settings - Advanced Settings - Factory Test.
I'm sure at some point in the future you can use the controller to
control your amp but someone has to write the necessary code first.

Not knowing your thumbs I can't give you a definitive answer if they
are too big ;-)
I've been using the controller over the last couple of months almost
daily and never had the feeling the scroll wheel was too slippery.
I never have dry hands so this could be a whole different story if you
tend to have very dry hands.
