The record companies, their lawyers, and the RIAA have been trying to deal with a very real problem that threatens their very existence - the theft and pirating of copyright protected music. Revenue from the sale of recorded music has been plummeting, while the use of file sharing, bit torrent, or even Napster-like sites in the early days, has continued to increase. I wonder how many of the people on these forums who talk about having many, many tens of thousands of tracks, have acquired those tracks in an appropriate way. Maybe I'm too skeptical by nature, but with all the enthusiastic audiophiles and music fans I know, few people I have met have purchased music collections so massive as what gets tossed around here pretty regularly. But maybe I'm wrong with that. Don't misunderstand my position, there have been many instances of massive overaction by the music industry. But their problem is real, and it affects artists too. The DRM approach was an attempt to try to keep a lid on impermissible use, but the problem is that it also limits what otherwise is fair use by the purchaser of the copy. There are a lot of smart people on these forums, solve this problem and it's win-win for all concerned. -- Goodsounds ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Goodsounds's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50531 _______________________________________________ discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
