It's not much and there is no distortion to begin with or I probably would have told him. He can compare and all it takes is investing in a connect. As far as borrowing a dac, I've found it's not like borrowing sugar from a neighbor as most people not only don't have one, they don't have any idea what one is. Maybe in a big city but then again... knock knock... may I borrow your DAC for a test. :) Lets be realistic here, most people seem to notice an improvement with mostly pretty expensive equipment. Sometimes even then it's not a huge gap. Same with DAC's, you see pro's and cons even in the upper end equipment. Spend 2 grand on the transporter or 2 grand on speakers and I'll say every time let's go listen to some new speakers. Sell the ones he has and maybe 3 grand in speakers is going to be a much better investment that the transporter will be. Now if he already had the speakers then it might be a different story. Then again maybe a different amp. These are great receivers but not up with quality that it takes to spend 2 grand to gain something that the receiver can't take advantage of. Spending more on a DAC than any of his other equipment, I believe, would be ridiculous which is basically what he would be doing. The same applies to me.
