Hi Ariel,
I've done a couple of mixed-mode workshops and several where all the
participants were remote, but clustered. What I think I've learned is:
a) 2-3 remote sites at most (the odds of the A/V working properly
decline dramatically above that).
b) Several people at each remote site (so no one is isolated).
c) Helpers at the remote sites. (Make sure those helpers understand
they're to be there the whole time - an A/V tech who comes in to make
sure the projector is working, then leaves, doesn't count.)
d) Really good audio. The class needs to be able to see your screen,
and you need some sort of visual feedback on the class, but what's most
important turns out to be whether they can hear you and you can hear
them *clearly*.
e) A narrow range of timezones - if there's a 6-hour difference between
your earliest and latest site, someone's family responsibilities are
going to be toast, and you're not going to get everyone's most awake hours.
f) Two devices for the instructor: you screenshare one, and use the
other to monitor the Etherpad.
Hope this helps - like Raniere said, please let us know what we can do
to help and how it goes.
Cheers,
Greg

Hi everyone,
I am starting to plan a workshop with collaboration with NOAA here in
Seattle. One of the questions that has come up in organizing this is
whether it would be possible for scientists in other NOAA facilities
to attend through webex.
Has anyone done a workshop which included 'live' attendees, and other
'remote' attendees through videoconference? Is it sufficient to have a
few helpers in the remote location to help people get unstuck? What
are some helpful practices to keep in mind when trying to teach in
this mixed fashion?
Thanks,
Ariel
