pyzmq should be installed by Anaconda for Python 2 and Python 3 [2]. AFAIK you need pyzmq to Jupyter Notebook work. But you don't need MayaVi for the workshop. At some point we disable the check for MayaVi [3], so I would suggest that you merge your workshop page with https://github.com/swcarpentry/workshop-template/ or just copy https://github.com/swcarpentry/workshop-template/blob/gh-pages/setup/swc-installation-test-2.py and past into your workshop page.
