Have any of you heard of a website called Versatile PhD? They're a website whose focus is to help PhDs transition to non-academic careers. They sell subscriptions for website access to universities such as UPenn, Yale, Duke, Harvard. Every now and then, they have a panel where have former PhDs talk about a specific career path, for example, technical writing.
This past week, they had a panel on software development careers. I wasn't a panelist, but there were quite a few biology and humanities PhDs asking about how to get started learning software skills. I waved the Software Carpentry flag around and advertised our organization. I also made suggestions about open source software. I got the impression that most of the panelists didn't know much about open source software or Software Carpentry, probably because their focus was on finding jobs that pay the bills. One panelist had heard of Software Carpenty. I don't know if Software Carpentry has too much overlap with this website, since they are focused on career transitions, but I thought it might be useful to share my experience. Sincerely, Terri
