I was writing of 'soft' degree programs. Using a community
college to get the first two years of your math degree out of the way
just means that your parents aren't rich. And Math degrees, while not
directly relevant to the SysAdmin trade, do seem to correlate with the
ability to figure things out.

Sure, I'm an arrogant jerk, I never claimed otherwise. (and clearly,
I should have kept my mouth shut, but I can't resist digging myself deeper.
Besides, I can't leave you just assuming that I hate poor people, or
that I think a person's wealth is a good proxy for judging their
ability to do a technical job.)

I'm pretty sure you glossed over the 'soft' part. Do you honestly think
it better to have an AA in psychology, or, say history when applying for a
technical job? Does being able to quote Hideki Tōjō help you diagnose
a flaky server?

I feel similarly about artists who went to more expensive schools, though my
assumption is that a person who went to a four year school to be an artist
had someone else to pay for it. (how's that for offensive?)

Maybe I'm just bitter. Looking at my siblings, if I was born a few years
later, I'd probably have gotten my parents to foot the bill for a useless
history degree. (It's always been a hobby. Not particularly useful
for anything, of course, but fun.) would I have been happier making
coffee, arguing about Churchill and not getting a job that paid more than
retail before the age of 30? maybe. My grammar and pronunciation would
certainly be better than they are. But maybe not. I'm pretty
ambitious, and the history degree wouldn't have helped with that. I think
things turned out okay.
