Jane,
I've not found a way to deal with it and I was rong, it's been
happening to me for quite a while now. The only thing I can do as
you say is monitor the desktop and when the download is complete,
the .download extention goes away.

dialog came up and gave me the option of not quitting, so I chose
that. But when I went into the Downloads window, I just got and am
still dealing with only buttons. I can't get any idea on how far I
have to go with the download.
