Subject: copying from desktop to other folder

Folks, is there any reason why I can't copy a file from my Desktop to another folder? I highlight the file and try copying it and it says copied, but then I can't past it into another folder. If I press command + v it does and says absolutely nothing. I've not run into this before and I'm sure there's a reason.
Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated.

tnx

Scott
