Audacity

I just wanted to ask folks how successful were they with using  
Audacity to edit sound files, in particular I'm interested in editing  
mp3 files.
I thought I'd ask before installing it as there seems to be quite a  
bit of additional stuff to really make it work so I wanted to be sure  
it was reasonably accessible before going through the process of  
installing all this stuff. Now perhaps I misunderstand what all has  
to be installed, but I got the impression from what I read there a  
few items needed before you can really get into editing mp3 files.
