Actually, I sometimes get the complete opposite behavior.  When  
writing replies in mail, often times vo stops talking altogether.  I  
usually need to turn it off, and back on to get it to begin talking  
again, so this isn't limited to just word/character mode.  I always  
kep vo in character mode.
